Vera Cruz Pottery Cormorant Duck

9316. Vera Cruz Pottery Cormorant Duck

South central region, Late Classic period, Ca. 600 to 900 AD.

A buff clay sacred vessel, the bird is symbolic for the watery surface of the underworld. A most interesting vignette on the wing is a carved scene where a Priest or Warrior is about to sacrifice (behead) a captive on a scaffolding. Size: 6-1/2 inches Height x 8 inches Length + custom mount This pouring vessel probably contained a drug which induced relaxation to calm the victims before the ceremony. Good deposits. Some repair
