8552. Campanian Red Figure Hydria by the Ixion Painter

South Italy, Ca. 330 to 310 BC.

An elaborate three handled vessel decorated with a youth draped in a himation standing in a central shrine (naiskos). The naiskos is flanked on either side by armed hoplites (warriors) depicted in their full military panopy. The soldier to the left wears a Greek type helmet, while the one on the right wears the Samnite type. All the elements of the weaponry are underlined by added white and yellow pigment with smaller highlights in red (shields, greaves, breast plate and helmets). The hoplite to the right carries his mantle. A vividly painted swan is about to fly off just to the left of one of the the hoplites.
The reverse has a highly ornate pattern of palmette leaves and the device above the body before the shoulder is a beautiful rosette band. The neck, which on the obverse (front) has profile heads facing each other.
Condition: Intact state of preservation. General wear as expected with an object of this age, and a small chip near the mouth rim.
