Mayan Polychrome Painted Itzamna Cylinder

8452. Mayan Polychrome Painted Itzamna Cylinder

Chama, Ca. 550 to 950 AD.

This vase is originally from Chama in the southern highlands of Guatemala, although it may not have come from the city because polychrome vessels were traded and given as gifts among the Maya elite. It represents a double portrait, or mirror image of the supreme god, Itzamna, whose name means Lord of Wisdom. He is receiving a plate of maize cakes as an offering on one side of the vessel, and a jaguar cushion throne on the other. The glyphs repeat his name, which is also partially included in his headdress.
Dimension: Height 6 1/2 in. x Width 6 1/8 in.
Condition: Very good, intact; cracks on bottom repaired, no inpainting.
