Limestone Human Headed Canopic Jar Lid, Imsety, Third
Intermediate Period, 1069 to 715 BC. A well carved example of
the human headed son of Horus, Imsety. The voluminous form with
broad wig, large ears and fine facial features as is evident
in the remains of the thin lips and nose. This lid was once part
of a canopic set designed to hold the internal organs of a member
of the Ancient Egyptian's upper class and was part of the standard
funerary equipment. Condition: Abrasions, restoration to nose,
wear, losses and brown patination to stone. Trace remains of

Said to have been purchased during the first Thomas Cook tour

and columns of inscription in front and on the back pillar and

Ptolemaic Period, Ca. 300 BC. The mask with a blue wig, the details
of the beaded broad collar in green, blue, red, white and ochre
slip, the ochre face, possibly once gilded, with detailed eyes
and ears, a winged scarab across the crown of the head and a
band with a sun disc around the forehead and tied in a loop with
tails at the back, 16¾in. (42.5cm.); a pectoral plate
with a kneeling winged Nut, holding out the Maat 'Feather of
Truth' in each hand and wearing a solar disc, with a Broad Collar
above and a solar disc with two uraei above that, 12¾in.
(32.4cm.) high; a leg section depicting in two facing columns,
the Four Sons of Horus, with Imsety and Hapy at the top, Duamutef
and Qebhsenuef below, Isis and Nephthys beneath, 15½in.
(39.4cm.) high, and a hollow foot section with painted deep red
coloured feet, with ankle ties. 8¼in. (21cm.) long. Each
of the four sections with some minor damage and repair but all

51. Byzantine Bronze Polycandelon,
Oil Lamp holder, Ca. 6th to 7th Century AD. Byzantine churches
were illuminated by this type of chandeliers known as a polycandelon.
It is an openwork circular cast disc with a central cross and
a ring of circular openings near the edge which held glass conical
beakers containing oil with a floating wick. The entire disc
is suspended by the original hook and chains. 9-3/4 in D. x 18

Ca. 300 to 350 AD. A handsome youth with fine facial details;
large almond-shaped eyes with impressed pupils, incised details

the eyebrows, the hair pulled up in a central top-knot and dressed
in horizontal ridges around the top of the head, the funnel spout

of excellent form. He may be smoking as these are often depicted

Indian Marble Stela of Surya, The Sun God, Rajasthan, Ca.
10th to 12th Century AD. Standing in an elaborate stepped colonnade
simulating a temple facade, with a rounded halo behind his head
and holding lotus blossoms in each upraised hand. He wears an
an intricate headdress, an elaborately dhoti and a long floral
garland is draped over his forearms extending to his knees. He
is flanked on either side by four smaller attendant figures at

Hadda, Ca. 4th Century AD. A beautifully rendered naturalistic
depiction of a young prince, with oval face with delicately-arched
eyebrows, heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes downcast in contemplation,
straight nose, supple mouth with fleshy lips slightly parted
with remains of red pigment, and his hair arranged in wavy strands
on brow and drawn up into headdress. 8-1/2 in. (21.6 cm.) H.+
custom mount. Very good condition, repaired and missing behind.

Gandharan Schist Carved Scene: The Renunciation of Buddha,
Ca. 3rd Century AD. 11¾ in. (29.5cm.) W. Siddhartha wearing
princely robes seated on his richly caparisoned horse, Kanthaka,
the hooves supported by yakshas to avoid any noise, his groom,
Chandaka behind supporting the parasol, a figure above holding
a chain, confronted by Mara in aggressive stance, other figures
behind and above, narrow chevron band below. Very good example.

Cambodia, Bayon Style, Ca. 10th to 11th Century AD. Well rendered
on integral plinth with lotus around exterior, she has one hand
holding a lotus sprig to her exposed chest, she wears a sampot
(sarong), her face with pleasant expression, head surmounted
with a conical shaped headdress and a broad diadem. She is also
bejeweled with armlets, earrings and necklace. Intact with a
varied surface patina. 20-1/2 in (52 cm) H. + mounted on a wood

Khmer Bronze Conch and Tripod Stand, Cambodia, Ca.
10th to 12th Century AD. Naturalistically cast voluminous shell
with channel spout. There is elaborate scrolliate designs and
a small openwork central figure of Vishnu atop. Along with the
shell is a delicate three legged circular stand of the same period,
each foot with the head of a Makara Conch shells are essential
to Buddhist ceremonies, blown at certain moments to ward off
evil spirits or to purify water during the rituals. Shell: 8-1/4

nose with nostrils that extend to the sides of the face, a two-tiered
semicircular structure that rises to the temples and descends

extensions near the chin, as well as to the edges behind and

128. Yoruba Iron Staff, Osanyin, Nigeria,
Openwork with raised central birds amid of ring of smaller birds.
These iron staffs, surmounted by birds and dedicated to Osanyin,
deity of herbal medicine, promoted healing and discouraged witchcraft.
The birds honor the powers of elderly women, who could transform
themselves into birds, to gain their support in the healing.
The staffs were placed in the ground next to the ailing person.

Crest, Nigeria. Nigeria. Voluminous rounded head with striated
coiffure and top knot, slit eyes, inlaid with glass and mouth

very well preserved. The use of the boldly painted black and
white pigment on the large rounded surface is quite expressive.
