Antiquities Roadshow to Santa Fe NM August 2007

Gallery Press Release - 08/02/2007

Howard Nowes Ancient Art 2006 Exhibition

The Sixth Annual Historic Indian & World Tribal Arts show is taking place again this year in Santa Fe New Mexico. This yearly event is held at the College of Santa Fe's Shellaberger Tennis Center, from August 9-12, 2007. The entrance is just off St. Michaels Blvd.

This fair takes lots of planning and preparation in advance. This is a high level vetted show with some of the premier tribal and ethnographic art dealers, some European dealers making the journey from across the ocean. One has to put their best foot forward. Experts check the correctness, age and condition of each object to make sure the art is correctly labeled. These are specialist in the independent fields of African, and Oceanic ethnographic art, pre Columbian art, American Indian art and world textiles. Each object will be priced and described to aid collectors in making their decisions.

In addition to the tribal show, there is ART Santa Fe. Performances at The Santa Fe Opera and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, exhibitions at the city's many museums such as SITE Santa Fe, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of International Folk Art are worth a visit.

I had to organize the booth colors, showcases, lighting and pedestals well in advance. I then had to choose what objects from the showroom to exhibit and make sure they were in the gallery available, mounted properly, and then I set them aside. I had to have the packing done 1 week in advance so the crates could be trucked west in time for set up. Now as I write this, I am generating the labels and price lists for the booth.

The show is hard work and the fun begins once we get there. Unpacking makes a mess and we must set up the booth, adjust the lighting and make sure all the labels are correct. As a dealer, of course I can not resist looking around at my colleague’s selections and seeing if there is anything for me. I like to keep my prices fair, and although there is amazing wonderful works at the show, I have to be more careful then a collector, as I am buying for resale. Dealers do like to do business with one another for the most part and at this high level of a show, most folks know each other.

Do not miss out on all the fabulous buying opportunities at the Sixth Annual Historic Indian & World Tribal Arts show. Not only is it in the beautiful scenic mesa of Santa Fe New Mexico, but just imagine me and approx. 75 other dealers all in one place at one time to offer you what is hot in the expanding Tribal and Ethnographic art market today.
