Ca. 350 BC. Bulbous vessel on raised disc foot with twin handles
on shoulder and one behind on neck and wide flared rim. Decorated
with a nude male and a draped female on either side of an altar.
A decorative floral band around neck. Palmette leaves behind
and on sides and wave band on rim and as a ground line for the
figure. Intact and excellent condition. 13in H. Ex New York Collection.

6990. Apulian Large Red
Figure Covered Lekanis, Ca. 4th Century BC. A beautiful deep
and wide footed bottom vessel section with twin handles at sides,
decorated with profile heads of a Lady of Fashion amid
various other devices, wave patterns and palmette leaves. The
knob lid top wonderfully decoratec with two vignettes separated
by palmette leaves. Each consists of back to back reclining draped
female attendants, they each hold a bird or a tray in upraised
hands. 11 in Wide x 6 inches H. Repaired but still very fine.

7046. Fine Gnathian Pottery Epichysis,
South Italy, Apulia, Ca. 4th century BC. Spool shaped vessel
on rounded base with thin neck, elegant pinched pouring spout
and looped handle. Two litle lion masks molded at base of spout.
Gnathia was a sub style of the Apulia region in South Italy who
produced these black glazed vessels with bands of decorative
stylized grape bands and egg patterns. Good remains of added
red, yellow, and white. Size: 7"H. Intact and excellent.

the Guttos (an oil pouring vessel) and the Lekythos (an oil holding
vessel), decorated with a sprawling nude youth, perhaps an athlete,
holding an object in his left hand and right arm also extended
holding an instrument, wreath around his head; palmettes to each

6697. Fine Greek Silver Stater Coin For Aspendos,
Pamphylia, Asia Minor, Ca. 300 to 250 BC. Excellent stike front
and back, the obverse features two naked athletes wrestling,
grasping each other by the arms. The reverse features a slinger,
advancing right, about to discharge his sling. In a field to
the right, triskeles of human legs. 7/8 in D. Excellent tone.
Ref: BMC 99/53. This coin is a tribute to the Wrestlers that
participated in the Ancient Olympics. Like the modern sport,
an athlete needed to throw his opponent on the ground, landing
on a hip, shoulder, or back for a fair fall. 3 throws were necessary
to win a match. Biting was not allowed, and genital holds were
also illegal. Attacks such as breaking your opponent's fingers
were permitted.
